The north, past 1000 Steps 16

Everything beyond the last hotel: the plantation coast, the flamingo lake, the oldest village and the national park. Reckon on forty minutes from town to Rincon, and fill up before you go — there is no fuel north of Kralendijk.

The coast either side of town 49

The dive sites, the hotels and the shore entries within ten minutes of the centre. This is the strip where you are within reach of a shower and a beer, which is why most first snorkels happen here.

Four hundred metres end to end, and where most of this list lives: the restaurants, the shops, the two museums and the pier the boats leave from. You do not need the car for any of it.

The south, past the airport 20

One flat road with the sea on your right: the salt pans, the huts, the beaches and the lighthouse on the southern tip. Nothing to buy anywhere on it, so take water and take more than you think.

The east: Lac Bay and Sorobon 4

The windward side, and the only water on the island you can stand up in a hundred metres out. Twenty-five minutes from town over the inland road, and the wind is always stronger here than it looks from the terrace.
