Lac Bay - Sorobon

A reef closes it off from the open sea, so the water inside stays warm, flat and mostly knee-deep.

It is the island's most important nursery: the seagrass beds and the mangroves that fringe the eastern side are where young fish, conch and turtles grow up before they move out to the reef. That is also why the bay is protected and why you cannot take a boat with an engine into the mangrove channels — only guided kayak trips go in.

Sorobon, on the west side, is the part you can walk onto, and it is where the windsurf schools are. Mornings are calm; the trade wind builds through the day. The bay is free to visit, guided trips are not. Half a day at least. The nature fee applies to anything you do in the water here.
