Devil’s Mouth

Devil's Mouth is a stretch of the wild northeast coast of Bonaire where the swell drives into undercut limestone, about half an hour's drive from Kralendijk on the road across the interior.

There is no beach and no shelter — the sea arrives here straight off the open Atlantic and breaks against rock that has been eaten hollow, throwing spray several metres up. The sound is as much of the attraction as the sight. The rock is sharp and slippery where it is wet, and the cliff edge is undercut: stay well back from it.

Do not swim. The current along this coast is strong and there is no safe exit. Come when the wind is up, which is most of the day and strongest in the afternoon — a calm day makes the drive pointless. Free, no facilities, no shade. Half an hour, and combine it with the rest of the northern loop.
