The west, out to Westpunt 17

The beaches the island is known for, in bays between the cliffs: Cas Abao, Grote Knip, Playa Porto Mari. Reckon on three quarters of an hour from Willemstad, and go in the morning — the car parks fill up and several charge for entry.

Willemstad and around it 23

Punda and Otrobanda on either side of the water, joined by the pontoon bridge that swings open for every ship. This is the walkable part: the forts, the market, the coloured facades and the restaurants, all within twenty minutes on foot.

The east: Jan Thiel, Spanish Water, Oostpunt 10

The organised side: beach clubs with loungers and a bar, the marina at Spanish Water, and the wild windward coast beyond it. Fifteen minutes from town, and the one part of the island where a beach day costs money.
