Bonaire's west coast has dozens of entries and on any given morning some are glass-calm and others are churned up; a guide who knows which is which saves you the drive and the disappointment. Trips suit anyone who can swim, and the pace follows the slowest person rather than the fittest.

Reckon on two to three hours including the drive between sites. Mornings, before the wind. Prices depend on group size — ask when you book — and the STINAPA nature fee applies on top, as it does for anyone entering the water here. Mask and fins can be borrowed, but bring your own if you have them; a mask that fits properly is the difference between an hour of pleasure and an hour of fiddling.
