Having all three under one roof is the practical advantage: a car for the day you drive to Washington Slagbaai, a scooter for the days you are only going to a dive site and back, and a bicycle for the evening. Swapping between them costs less than keeping a car parked for a week you barely use it.
A scooter runs around twenty-five to forty dollars a day, usually with a full tank, helmets and tax included; a deposit of a hundred to three hundred dollars is normal and is generally held on a credit card. You need to be eighteen to hire one and a Dutch or European car licence is enough for the standard models. Helmets are compulsory on Bonaire and are worn — the police do check. Bring your passport or ID as well as the licence.

The south coast route is built for exactly this: half a day, paved road the whole way, and the story starting by itself the moment you reach a stop. Golf carts are not allowed into Washington Slagbaai and the unpaved north is not made for them, so the south is where a cart earns its keep.
