It was cut off from the sea by coral growth, and the shallow brackish water is where a large part of the island's flamingos feed.

The road runs along the southern shore and there is a lookout with benches. That is as close as you should get: the birds lift off if you approach on foot, and a disturbed flock stops feeding. Bring binoculars — from the road the flamingos read as a pink line rather than as birds. Parakeets, herons and iguanas use the same shoreline.

Early morning and late afternoon are when the birds are most active and the light is not flattening everything to white. Free, and no facilities. Half an hour at the lookout, longer if you are birdwatching; combine it with Rincon and the road on to Karpata.
