Donkey Sanctuary

Marina Melis and Ed Koopman started it in 1993 after finding injured animals along the roadside; it now cares for more than six hundred donkeys.

You drive through it in your own car at walking pace, windows down, and the donkeys come to you — they know what a stopped car means. Hay and carrots are sold at the entrance and feeding is the point of the visit. Cars, scooters, bicycles and walking are all fine; golf carts are not allowed in.

Open every day from ten in the morning until four in the afternoon, with last entry at three. Admission is nine dollars for adults and half that for children up to twelve; card payments have a twenty-dollar minimum, so bring cash for a small party. No reservation needed. An hour is enough, an hour and a half if you stop at the terrace.
