Joe's Restaurant

It opened in 2012 as a straightforward grill and has grown into something more careful without losing that: steaks and fish off the grill, an international menu around them, and surprise menus of four, five or six courses if you would rather not choose. Vegetarian dishes and a children's menu are on the list, which on this island is less common than it sounds.

Open Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 17:30 to 23:00, with the kitchen closing at 22:00; closed Wednesday and Thursday. Those two closed days catch people out, so check before you walk over. Dinner only, and reservations are sensible in high season. Two hours à la carte, closer to three for a surprise menu.

Prices sit in the middle of the Kralendijk range — above the beach bars, below the fine dining on the waterfront — and the surprise menus cost less per course than ordering the same number à la carte. It is a five-minute walk or a two-minute drive from the centre, so you do not need a car for it.
