Ser'i Otrobanda viewpoint

The word “Ser’i” in Papiamentu literally means hill or elevated place. From this viewpoint you can look out over the Sint Anna Bay, the famous Handelskade, the Queen Emma Bridge, and the historic district of Punda.

Historically, this hillside neighborhood was home to working families who wanted to live close to the city but outside the busy commercial center. The narrow streets and colorful houses still reflect how this residential area developed throughout the twentieth century.

In recent years this part of Otrobanda has also become part of the neighborhood’s creative revival. Several houses, stairways, and walls have been transformed with murals and street art, connecting the history of the area with the modern artistic movement that helped revitalize Otrobanda.

From Ser’i Otrobanda you can clearly see how compact Willemstad really is. On one side lies the historic colonial architecture of Punda, while on this side you find the lively residential streets of Otrobanda. Together they form the historic heart of the city, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
