Otrobanda

The district is located on the western side of Sint Anna Bay, across from Punda, and was founded in 1707 as Willemstad expanded beyond its original city walls. While Punda developed as the main commercial center, Otrobanda grew into a lively residential neighborhood shaped by diverse cultures, music, and local traditions.

In recent years, Otrobanda has experienced a remarkable transformation. Many historic buildings have been restored and the neighborhood has evolved into a creative and cultural hub. Street art has played a major role in this revival. Walls of houses, alleys, and public spaces have been turned into vibrant murals that reflect the stories and identity of the community.

Many of these murals were created through community initiatives such as the Kaya Kaya movement, where residents collaborated with local and international artists to revitalize the neighborhood. The goal was not only to add art, but also to strengthen community pride and attract new activity to the area.

As you walk through Otrobanda, you will notice that street art appears almost everywhere. Some murals are hidden in small alleyways, while others cover entire buildings with colorful portraits, animals, symbols, and Caribbean patterns. Together they create an open-air gallery that continues to evolve with the neighborhood.
