Kaya Kaya Street Art Area

This area around Frederikstraat and the surrounding streets became well known through the Kaya Kaya street art project. What was once a quiet and sometimes neglected neighborhood was gradually transformed when residents and artists came together to bring new life to the area through art, music, and community events.

During the Kaya Kaya festival, walls of houses, garages, and small squares were opened up to local and international artists. What started as a small community initiative quickly grew into a project that helped position Otrobanda as one of the most creative neighborhoods in Curaçao. Many of the murals you see here are not just decorative but carry messages about identity, freedom, community, and Afro-Caribbean culture.

As you walk through these streets, you will notice a wide variety of artistic styles. Some murals are realistic portraits, while others use abstract shapes, vibrant colors, and symbolic imagery. Well known artworks in this area include “Bida ta un Bunita Lucha,” meaning life is a beautiful struggle, as well as murals referencing music, emancipation, and Caribbean pride.

What makes this area special is that the art is fully integrated into everyday life. People still live in the houses where these murals are painted. Children play in the streets, neighbors sit outside their homes, and visitors wander through the neighborhood discovering new artworks. Instead of feeling like a traditional museum, this area feels like a living outdoor gallery.
