Bonaire on a budget: three days without paid excursions

Almost everything worth seeing on Bonaire is free: the beaches, the salt pans, the slave huts, the flamingos and the viewpoints all cost nothing to visit. What is unavoidable is the visitor entry tax and, if you go in the water, the nature fee. Skip the boat trips and the guided tours, buy your lunch at a supermarket or a food truck, and the three days below cost you transport and food and little else.

The two costs you cannot avoid are set by the government, not by the tourist industry, and they are the same whether you stay three days or three weeks. Everything below assumes you have paid them and want to spend nothing further on activities.

What it costs	Fixed: USD 75 visitor entry tax per person aged 13 and over, USD 10 for children up to 12. Add USD 40 nature fee per person per calendar year as soon as you enter the sea; children under 13 are exempt. A rental car, fuel and meals come on top — we have no current prices for those.
What you need	Your own snorkel and mask, a cool box, one supermarket run, and either a shared rental car or a scooter for the two days out of town.
Skip	Boat trips, guided tours and beachfront restaurants. The reef at Bachelor's Beach is the same reef the boats visit, and it is reached down a staircase for nothing.

Is Bonaire expensive?

Eating and drinking, yes; looking, no. Almost everything that makes the island worth the trip — the beaches, the salt pans, the slave huts, the flamingos, the viewpoints — costs nothing. The money goes on restaurants, the rental car and dive packages.

What does a week on Bonaire cost without diving?

Outside flights and lodging: reckon 40 to 60 euros per person per day if you handle breakfast and lunch yourself and eat out once a day. Renting a car for three days out of seven rather than all seven saves an easy 150 euros.

How do you save money on Bonaire?

Cook — the supermarkets in Kralendijk are well stocked — rent the car only on the days you actually need it, and snorkel from the shore instead of from a boat. The nature fee of 40 dollars lasts a year, so it is not a daily cost.

What you cannot avoid

The visitor entry tax is USD 75 per person from thirteen years old, USD 10 for children up to twelve, per visit. It is paid online in advance.
The nature fee is USD 40 per person per calendar year and applies to anyone entering the sea, snorkellers included. Children under thirteen are exempt.
A rental car shared between four people is usually cheaper per day than four scooter hires, and it carries the cool box.
The supermarkets on Kaya Industria are noticeably cheaper than the shops near the waterfront, and they are five minutes apart.
Bring your own mask and snorkel. Hiring for a week costs more than a set at home, and a mask that fits is worth more than a cheap day out.
