The hiking is what sets them apart. Bonaire is not an obvious walking island: it is hot, flat and mostly thorn scrub, and the routes that do work — the trails inside Washington Slagbaai, the coastal stretches in the north — are hard to find on your own and easy to misjudge in the heat. A guide who knows where the shade is turns that into a good morning.

Half a day for most trips, a full day for the park. Start early; by eleven the interior is genuinely hot, and there is no shade to walk into. Prices depend on the group and the programme, so ask when you book, and book ahead. Sturdy shoes rather than sandals: the ground everywhere off the road is loose limestone and thorn.
